Severe frost but not shade could limit the future growing season of Erythronium americanum

چکیده

Changes in climate are leading to modifications the timing of seasonal events such as migrations and flowering. Erythronium americanum (trout lily) can break bud early response warming, but changes its growing season may be limited by shade from canopy trees frost. I experimentally assessed impact frost on senescence E. descriptively monitored vernal air soil temperatures a garden setting. Early did not affect senescence. Experimental exposure resulted increased leaf damage, earlier senescence, greater corm death than control plants. Despite ten days which temperature dropped below freezing, there was no evidence damage field. These results suggest that will hasten end future for americanum, late could bring about if is sufficiently hard.

Source–sink imbalance increases with growth temperature in the spring geophyte Erythronium americanum

Spring geophytes produce larger storage organs and present delayed leaf senescence under lower growth temperature. Bulb and leaf carbon metabolism were investigated in Erythronium americanum to identify some of the mechanisms that permit this improved growth at low temperature. Plants were grown under three day/night temperature regimes: 18/14 °C, 12/8 °C, and 8/6 °C. Starch accumulated more sl...

Communities of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Detected in Forest Soil Are Spatially Heterogeneous but Do Not Vary throughout the Growing Season

Despite the important ecosystem role played by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), little is known about spatial and temporal variation in soil AMF communities. We used pyrosequencing to characterise AMF communities in soil samples (n = 44) from a natural forest ecosystem. Fungal taxa were identified by BLAST matching of reads against the MaarjAM database of AMF SSU rRNA gene diversity. Sub-sam...

Growing old but not growing apart: twin similarity in the latter half of the lifespan.

While a substantial amount of behavioral genetic research has helped to characterize developmental trends in twin similarity in early life, relatively little is known about changes in twin similarity with age in adulthood. We investigated age moderation of twin similarity for a composite measure of cognitive ability, depression symptomatology and hand grip strength in a cross-sectional sample o...

The alternative respiratory pathway allows sink to cope with changes in carbon availability in the sink-limited plant Erythronium americanum.

Mechanisms that allow plants to cope with a recurrent surplus of carbon in conditions of imbalance between source and sink activity has not received much attention. The response of sink growth and metabolism to the modulation of source activity was investigated using elevated CO(2) and elevated O(3) growth conditions in Erythronium americanum. Sink activity was monitored via slice and mitochond...
